Before we talk roofs, poles, or what any of it costs, there's one question that matters more than the other two put together: does the dish have a clear view of the sky. For most of the properties we work on across the GTA and up into cottage country, that means a clean, unobstructed line toward the northern exposure — no branches, no ridge lines, no neighbour's chimney sitting in the way.
We lead with this because homeowners tend to arrive at the conversation backwards. They've already decided they want it on the roof, or already decided a pole looks tidier, and the actual performance question — what's blocking the sky from that spot — hasn't come up yet. A $549 pole mount bolted into a clear patch of yard will outperform a $449 roof mount tucked under a maple every time. The mount is a mechanical decision. The sky view is the only one that affects whether the internet actually works.
Trees are the usual culprit, not buildings. A two-storey house rarely blocks its own dish; a stand of cedars forty feet off the property line does, especially once they leaf out in June and you go from a clean winter signal to a rough summer one. Read the sky first. Roof versus pole only has one right answer once that's settled.
Most of the time, it is. If your house is the tallest thing on the property and the roofline already clears the tree line, a roof or gable mount is the simplest, cheapest and least visually awkward option — and it's what we install more than anything else. Short cable run, no extra hardware, nothing new standing in the yard.
The part that actually matters is how the penetration gets sealed, because a bad one is where "roof mount" gets its reputation. We run the mount bracket through the roofing material to the deck and flash it the way you'd flash any other roof penetration — not caulk it and hope — then bring the cable through a separate weatherproofed entry point with a drip loop, so water travels away from the hole instead of following the cable straight into your attic. Silicone alone is not a seal; it's a maintenance item waiting to fail. We treat it as a penetration, because that's what it is.
Roof material changes the technique, not the price. Asphalt shingle is the easiest case — lift the course above the mount, seal underneath it, and the shingle above hides the hardware. Metal roofing means fastening into the panel rib with a butyl-sealed washer, never through a flat pan or across a seam, or the mount will find the one spot guaranteed to leak. Cedar shake takes the most care of the three — the wood splits if you're careless with placement, so the bracket goes over a full shingle, not the edge of one, and gets bedded and flashed accordingly. The extra $100 buys a freestanding structure instead of a bracket, and there are specific situations where that's worth it — not a general upgrade, just the right tool for a particular property.
The most common one: the roof doesn't have a clear sky view but somewhere else on the property does. A pole set out past the tree line, on a deck rail, or on a ballasted non-penetrating stand can get clear of an obstruction that no amount of roof-mount creativity will fix. Second: you don't want a hole in the roof at all — a rental, a roof you're planning to replace in the next few years, or a metal roof where you'd rather not add a fastener no matter how well it's sealed. Third, and the one people underrate until their first February: reach. A dish on a two-storey roofline needs a ladder every time it snows over; a pole mount at head height or on a ground stand, you walk out and clear it in your slippers.
Non-penetrating doesn't mean no planning. A ballasted stand needs enough weight and a stable, level surface to hold in wind, and a sunk ground pole needs a proper footing for the soil and frost conditions on site — something we assess on the visit, not guess at over text. Either way, nothing goes through your roofing material, and if you replace the roof next year, the mount doesn't care.

The flat rate covers the mount and a standard cable run into the house — through the wall nearest the mount, to wherever the router's going. That covers the majority of roof and gable jobs, where dish and den are a few metres of wall apart.
Pole mounts and awkward roof layouts often need more than that, which is where the per-foot rate applies: $2/ft for the extra run, materials at cost, receipt shown. If the pole sits out past the lawn, the cable usually goes into conduit and gets buried rather than strung overhead on a clothesline — cheaper to bury it right the first time than to fix a lawnmower incident later.
Router placement matters more than people expect. Central and elevated beats a basement corner, and if the house has dead zones — a detached garage, a finished basement behind a stairwell, a second floor at the far end — a mesh node fixes it properly instead of a Wi-Fi extender fighting for the same channel.
