DSL, fixed wireless, cellular, satellite and fibre — what actually works once you're past the town line, written by a certified AV field engineer who installed satellite and rural internet systems for Bell before Starlink existed. No sales pitch, just what we'd tell a neighbour.

Coverage maps make rural Ontario look solved. Zoom into the actual concession road and it isn't. Three separate pieces of infrastructure all run out at roughly the same point outside town, and they run out for different reasons — which is why "just switch providers" so rarely fixes anything.
DSL dies with distance. A phone line carrying internet loses signal quality the farther it runs from the central office or roadside cabinet — that's physics, not a coverage decision. Close to town you might get a usable connection; a few kilometres out, on the same line, you get a fraction of it, and past a certain distance the modem won't sync at all no matter what plan you're paying for.
Cable stops at the town line. Cable providers build out to a density threshold and stop — running new coax to serve one farmhouse a kilometre past the last subdivision doesn't pencil out for them, and it never will. If your neighbour two streets over has cable and you don't, that's usually the whole explanation.
Fibre buildouts are slow and patchy. Provincial and federal rural broadband programs are real, and fibre is genuinely being run into rural Ontario right now. But it goes in road by road, over years, funded and scheduled a township at a time. "Fibre is coming to the region" and "fibre is at your driveway" are two different sentences, often separated by a couple of construction seasons.
We're not going to hand you a chart of made-up speeds and prices — those numbers change constantly and depend on your exact address. What we can tell you, from having installed most of this ourselves, is how each technology actually behaves and what to check before you sign up.
DSL. Worth checking only if you're genuinely close to the exchange or cabinet — ask the provider for the specific line distance to your address, not a generic "available in your area" answer. If you're several kilometres out, don't expect it to carry video calls or streaming reliably, and don't expect that distance to get any shorter — copper plant gets maintained, not extended.
Fixed wireless. A dish or antenna on your property talks to a tower, so it needs honest line of sight — trees, a hill or a barn roof in the way will hurt or kill it, and a mast height that clears your own roofline this year may not clear a neighbour's new pole barn next year. It also shares that tower with everyone else pointed at it, so performance can drop hard on weekend evenings when the whole area is streaming at once. Ask who else is on that tower before you commit, and ask what happens to your speed at 8 pm on a Sunday, not at 2 pm on a Tuesday.
Cellular home internet. A router using the regular LTE or 5G network. This lives and dies by the nearest cell tower — its distance, its congestion, and whether it's built for data traffic or mostly phone calls. A coverage map bar doesn't tell you any of that; the only real test is a signal reading taken at the house itself, at a busy hour. An external antenna can pull a weak signal up to something usable, but it can't invent capacity on an overloaded tower.
Satellite — legacy vs. low-orbit. The old satellite internet most rural Ontario properties grew up with — including systems we installed for Bell — bounces the signal off a satellite parked in geostationary orbit, roughly 35,000 km up. That round trip creates real, noticeable lag: video calls and anything real-time suffer even when the download speed looks fine on paper. Starlink and the newer low-orbit satellite systems fly a few hundred kilometres up instead, which cuts that lag dramatically. The trade-off is weather — heavy rain or wet snow can degrade the link, and the dish needs a genuinely open view of the sky, not "mostly open."
Fibre. When it's actually run to your property, nothing else on this list competes. Check availability at the provider's own address-lookup tool, not a general regional announcement, before you rule out anything else.
I spent years installing satellite dishes and rural internet gear for Bell before Starlink existed, so I've watched this exact problem from the other side of the truck, on the technology that came before it. The properties where Starlink is the right call are the ones where every other option on this list has a real, physical reason it doesn't work — not just a slow speed, a hard no.
No line of sight to any tower. If fixed wireless and cellular both need a tower you can't see from any point on the property, satellite is the only technology left that doesn't care where the nearest tower is.
Lakes and forest. Cottages set back in trees, or across a lake from the road, are usually beyond cable, fibre and often line-of-sight wireless entirely. A dish with a clear shot at the sky sidesteps all of it.
Farms sitting between two towns. The classic "serviced on the map, unserviced in reality" address — just outside both towers' effective range, just past where the cable or fibre build stopped on either side. We see this most on properties that sit almost exactly halfway between two service areas, where every provider's map technically colours the address in, but no actual signal reaches it.
Where it doesn't win: a town core with working cable or fibre already at the house. If that's you, we'll say so — Starlink is not an upgrade over a solid wired connection, and installing it there would be $449 you didn't need to spend.
The kit works on its own. Where it gets mounted, how the cable gets into the house, and whether the rest of the property is actually covered — that's the part that decides whether it works well for years or ends up in a drawer.
Placement above the tree line. A dish clamped to the nearest wall gets partial sky and partial obstruction, and both show up as dropouts later. Weatherproof entry. The cable has to get from the dish into the house without becoming a leak. That means a proper sealed entry point, not a bead of silicone around a hole drilled through the siding.
Whole-property coverage. A router in the house does not reach a steel-sided shop, a detached garage or a barn a hundred metres out — steel and distance both kill Wi-Fi. Mesh Wi-Fi extends coverage across the yard; a real Ethernet drop is what actually gets a signal into a second building.
